SEC coaches have to perform. Even the bottom dwellers like Vandy and Kentucky are pressure jobs. Pressure to win and be competitive. Continued losing will result in a coaches firing for sure. But this is true at any place, any college, high school or pro team. You have to perform.
This year in the SEC I think most coaches are safe. Dan Mullen has been one I’ve mentioned in the past as being on the hot seat but he has done a decent job at Mississippi State. So has his rival at Ole Miss, Hugh Freeze. Freeze has recruited well and has the Rebels on the upswing,… either of these teams could,…. could challenge for the SEC West. At the very least, knock someone out that is challenging for the West.
Georgia’s Mark Richt is another guy I’ve been hard on the last couple of years. I think he is safe for now. But the Bulldogs are hungry for an SEC and National Championship and they feel they are right there,….
Will Muschamp is yet another coach I’ve mentioned in the past as being on the bubble. The Gators should be strong and contend for the East,… falling well short of at least being in the top 2 in the East could start those whispers rolling. Steve Spurrier is safe. He has done a nice job at Carolina. Nick Saban, Gus Malzahn, Les Miles, Gary Pinkel and Kevin Sumlin have all made their fans happy so they are safe.
Derek Mason is brand new at Vandy so he gets a pass for a couple of years. He does have some big shoes to fill,…
The coaches on the bubble in my humble opinion this year are Bret Bielema, at Arkansas, Mark Stoops at Kentucky and Butch Jones at Tennessee. All three coaches need to show some kind of improvement either in wins and losses or in being competitive. I don’t see Arky or Kentucky being improved enough. Tennessee maybe.
