El Pollito Loco/The Crazy Little Chicken,.... Yes Again!!

Folks,... there just aren't enough good things to say about The Chicken,... I finally got a chance to go and sit down there today and the experience only re-enforced what I already knew,  El Pollito is the best Mexican restaurant in the Shoals. Hands down. The new restaurant has plenty of spacious dining and the atmosphere is spot on. Service was most excellent and very attentive. If you haven't tried this place yet or you did in the former location and haven't tried the new place yet,. DO!! You owe it to yourself. Authentic Mexican food at it's absolute best. Oh,.... and the bottom picture is cheesecake tacos,.... for a limited time I think but it is available with either a chocolate or caramel drizzle,... Thank you Jorge and Jeanabeth,... Y'all have hit a homerun!!

Lauderdale County Board of Education Shenanigans?,…..

I just ran across this post from a concerned parent in Lauderdale County. Apparently the school board hasn't been too forthcoming with information about these meetings. If you are concerned about the future of the schools either from a parent standpoint or an alum,... you might want to check into these meetings and see if the board is indeed trying to avoid the public.

-------------------------------------------

PARENTS OF CENTRAL STUDENTS AND ALL LAUDERDALE COUNTY SCHOOLS!!

I recommend you pay close attention to these dates and attend at least one, if not more of these community meetings if possible. Unbeknownst to most of us, our school system is more than half way into a 5 year study that looks at the feasibility and benefit of combining all Lauderdale county schools into one cohesive system. What does this mean? That in the not so distant future there could be no more Central, Waterloo, Wilson etc. The thought is to have an East Lauderdale and a West Lauderdale.
I won’t input my own personal feelings here but I will say that the lack of publicity for these meetings is very distasteful. The goal for these is to obtain community input on the matter, yet the community knows very little about it.
I urge you to show up, be informed and voice your opinion, whatever that opinion may be.
Thursday February 21 at LCHS
Monday February 25 at the Board Annex on Middle Road
Tuesday February 26 at Central School
Thursday March 7 at Brooks
All are scheduled 5:00-7:00pm

Turning 60 Ain't For Sissies,..... Part One of a Series of I have No Clue,...

Turning 60 is quite a milestone it seems. For most in the picture above, we will achieve that rank in age,... We will miss Mary on the front row though. She passed away shortly after this picture was taken.
But for the rest of us,... We are either at the 60 mark or will get there very shortly. Getting old used to bother me a bit. Turning 30, I was depressed. I guess because I was leaving my twenties. 40 came along and that was fun. Along with 50, I'm thinking I'm finally middle aged. But that's only if I make it to 100. So now 60 quickly approaches for me personally,... at this point, I'm just happy to be here.

I'm going to be doing a few of these posts throughout the year in honor of my classmates that have or will turn that magic number this year,... Happy Birthday!!

Turning 60 means:

At 60 years old, your birthday suit requires regular ironing.

We put 60 candles on your cake, but by the time we got the last one lit, the first twenty had already burned out.

At 60, people call you “spry” and you’re not offended.

At 60, fortune tellers read your face instead of your palm.

Your favorite station on cable is the Weather Channel.

You shop at Target and Walmart for the great clothes.

The old spark takes a little more blowing to get going.

You know your way around but you don’t want to go anywhere.

Your wife suggests you pull in your stomach and you get a hernia doing it.

You're not only interested in automobile airbags, you've become one.

The candles on your cake set off the sprinkler system.

You still miss your high school car, but you can’t remember your classmates.

No More Tank Tops. It's a rule.

Your pants creep upward as you get older. By 60 you’re a pair of pants with a head.

At 60 years old, your birthday suit requires regular ironing.

We put 60 candles on your cake, but by the time we got the last one lit, the first twenty had already burned out.

At 60, people call you “spry” and you’re not offended.

At 60, fortune tellers read your face instead of your palm.

You can still chase women, but only downhill.

When someone leaves a sexy lipstick message on your mirror, your first reaction is you wonder how to clean it off.

Shame Shame Shame On the Florence City Council,....

Florence residents,... we got sold out by those that were elected to serve,.... you and me. Throw Steve Holt's name in there too,... he's as guilty as this council is.

Let me make it clear so there isn't any misconception of my thoughts,... I DO think it was past time for the police and fire departments to receive a raise. It is sad that they cannot make a living and actually can go to smaller cities like Muscle Shoals and do the same work for more pay. Especially when the police and fire departments could have been given a raise long before last Tuesday. If I worked there I'd be kinda pissed off about not getting a raise sooner.

I watched the council meeting online last Tuesday night and it wouldn't have mattered if 500 people had spoken and asked Dick and the Jordanaires to wait about voting on a tax increase. This council was dead set on voting for it last Tuesday. They also claimed that the public had been given ample time and notice of said vote. They lied. Tuesday morning was the first many people heard about the vote to increase our sales tax. Ole Tricky Dick and the council pulled one over on us. Just like they did with the 2 million dollars Florence gave back claiming it was RSA money. It wasn't RSA money. It was our money, yours and mine because it was taxpayer money. The lying continues with this council.

Also I was given permission to share this with you in my blog,... this was written Tuesday before the vote by Susan Abroms and I thank her for letting me use it. Susan has been a friend for several years and she is one of the smartest people I know. I've said on more than one occasion Florence missed out on her leadership abilities. But this is what she said,... "Call your legislators and have the SEDA tax changed by a legislative act. Our legislators are already talking about revising this tax with our local leaders. Mayor Holt has been part of the conversation. One of the conversations they are talking about is to continue to collect then give the money back to the individual cities once the balance reaches a certain level. Cities can’t budget with this method when they could lose this allocation at any time. Instead, lower the SEDA tax rate from .5% to .25% then increase our City tax by the same .25% which keeps our total tax rate the same at 8.5%. Getting this one tax allocation changed, which I believe can be done given the current conversations, almost provides enough to completely cover what is needed. Then raise our lodging tax to offset other City expenses, this stops the additional burden on our citizens. Remember raising sales taxes hurts the poorest in a City, it’s a regressive tax. Call your legislators AND your council members AND Mayor."
So apparently there was a way to give the police and fire fighters a raise without,.... WAIT FOR IT,.... raising our taxes. IF the council and mayor had done their due diligence and actually taken the time to research the situation, they might could have learned how to provide a raise without raising taxes. (I say might could have because they haven't displayed much in the way of smarts). Taxes that lower incomes have to deal with along with all of us. But no,.... they were dead set on raising it Tuesday night.

Not only did the Florence City Council raise our taxes but,... they also slipped in an extra percentage that will be going to Florence City Schools....forever as much as we can tell, about an extra $500,000 annually. Remember Florence City Schools already gets .37 of 1% they think by strategically doing this 2 years in with 2 more to go people will forget. These are a sly bunch,... and they need to be voted out. We need leaders, people that care about our city AND citizens.  The ones pictured above and lets not forget the mayor,  care nothing about you and I. Remember these people when election time comes again. It's time Florence moves forward and not sideways. We aren't moving backward, we just are not and cannot reach our full potential with liars and thieves representing us.

And another thing,.... most that know me know that I would never endorse the TimesFaily,... But,... this article was in their editorial section TimesFaily Opinion and I have to agree with it.

State of the Union With Alabama Football,….

First,.... I wish I could take credit for what is written below. This was a post on the TideFans forum that I had to share. It sums things up fairly nice for all of those chicken littles who think the sky is falling,... Roll Tide.

The State of the Union of Alabama Football

Well, let's see. Here are the stats that come to mind. If I'm not perfectly correct, I'm sure someone will correct me. But this is what I've come up with:

We just made the CFP for the fifth time - that would be every year there's been a CFP.
We made it to the finals for the fourth time since the CFP was created.
We've won the championship 2 times.
Here are our stats for the last 5 years:
2014 - 12-2, SEC champs, National championship semi-finalist
2015 - 14-1, SEC champs, National champions
2016 - 14-1, SEC champs, National championship finalist
2017 - 13-1, National champions
2018 - 14-1, SEC champs, National championship finalist

To summarize:

Record last 5 years: 67-6

4 SEC championships
2 national championships
2 national championship finalists
1 national championship semi-finalist

I think this year's College Football Playoffs (CFP) made it evident that we had a team loaded with talent and a coaching staff of great recruiters, but they lacked the coaching experience to create a game plan and make the adjustments during the game necessary to win the championship. I think the staff changes we're currently seeing are addressing those issues.

Our Offensive Coordinator (OC) did well enough to get a head coaching job, so he's leaving.
Coaches Gattis and Enos want to be OCs and call the plays, but Saban doesn't think they're ready. So they're leaving for OC positions at other schools.

The offensive line wasn't as good as it could've been, so Saban is replacing that position coach.
He's also working to find the best position coaches and OC he can find to fill the openings on the staff. With the talent we have, there should be coaches lining up to fill those positions.
We have a Heisman finalist returning at QB.
We have one of the best receiving corps in the nation returning.
We have 17 starters returning - from a team that finished #2 in the nation.
We have another #1 recruiting class joining the team. In fact, some say this is the best class Saban has brought to the Capstone. Stop and think about that for a minute.
In light of all of that, I think the state of the union for Bama football is very, very strong.
Roll Tide!

Crystal Meth,.... A Poem For Users,...

I found this poem this morning on Facebook. After reading it, I saved it to share here. Whether or not the story behind the poem is actually true, matters not to me. The poem itself is powerful and should be eye opening.

I've seen too many lives wasted on meth and prescription pills. The latter I blame on our area doctors. There are some that write them freely. Some of those people that receive the prescriptions, fill them for $30 a pop and sell them for $7-8 a pill. So a 30 day supply could net you $210,... Sad,...

Here is the poem,... Read it and do some research of your own on this drug. Find out the symptoms of users. Educate yourself and your family.

"I AM METH"
~ This was written by a young Indian girl who was in jail for drug
charges, and was addicted to meth. She wrote this while in jail. As you will
soon read, she fully grasped the horrors of the drug, as she tells in this
simple, yet profound poem. She was released from jail, but, true to her
story, the drug owned her. They found her dead not long after, with the
needle still in her arm....
Please understand,
this thing is worse than any of us realize...

My Name Is "Meth"

I destroy homes, I tear families apart, take your children, and that's just the start.
I'm more costly than diamonds, more precious than gold,
The sorrow I bring is a sight to behold.
If you need me, remember I'm easily found,
I live all around you - in schools and in town.
I live with the rich; I live with the poor,
I live down the street, and maybe next door.
I'm made in a lab, but not like you think,
I can be made under the kitchen sink.
In your child's closet, and even in the woods,
If this scares you to death, well it certainly should.
I have many names, but there's one you know best,
I'm sure you've heard of me, my name is crystal meth.
My power is awesome; try me you'll see,
But if you do, you may never break free.
Just try me once and I might let you go,
But try me twice, and I'll own your soul.
When I possess you, you'll steal and you'll lie,
You do what you have to -- just to get high.
The crimes you'll commit for my narcotic charms
Will be worth the pleasure you'll feel in your arms,
your lungs your nose.
You'll lie to your mother; you'll steal from your dad,
When you see their tears, you should feel sad.
But you'll forget your morals and how you were raised,
I'll be your conscience, I'll teach you my ways.
I take kids from parents, and parents from kids,
I turn people from God, and separate friends.
I'll take everything from you, your looks and your pride,
I'll be with you always -- right by your side.
You'll give up everything - your family, your home,
Your friends, your money, then you'll be alone.
I'll take and take, till you have nothing more to give,
When I'm finished with you, you'll be lucky to live.
If you try me be warned - this is no game,
If given the chance, I'll drive you insane.
I'll ravish your body, I'll control your mind,
I'll own you completely, your soul will be mine.
The nightmares I'll give you while lying in bed,
The voices you'll hear, from inside your head.
The sweats, the shakes, the visions you'll see,
I want you to know, these are all gifts from me.
But then it's too late, and you'll know in your heart,
That you are mine, and we shall not part.
You'll regret that you tried me, they always do,
But you came to me, not I to you.
You knew this would happen, many times you were told,
But you challenged my power, and chose to be bold.
You could have said no, and just walked away,
If you could live that day over, now what would you say?
I'll be your master, you will be my slave,
I'll even go with you, when you go to your grave.
Now that you have met me, what will you do?
Will you try me or not? It's all up to you.
I can bring you more misery than words can tell,
Come take my hand, let me lead you to hell.
If you care enough, please forward this profound poem and share the deadly outcome of this drug that is killing our young people & even our old.

Go'On Jalen,...

If you could look up Jalen Hurts in the dictionary, I would think you could find several words to describe him. Collegiate football player for the University of Alabama,... student-athlete,... quarterback,... all of those would fit and be accurate.

More fitting words though can certainly apply. Christian, honorable, classy, leader all certainly apply to this kid. In our Me-Me-Me culture of today, Jalen shined like a beacon in the night. He could have transfered,... he could have been a cancer to the team,... he could have quit. Instead Jalen Hurts did the honorable thing, he stuck it out. You can credit his parents with most of that I guess but ultimately it all fell on Jalen to do the right thing. Thank you sir.

Jalen Hurts is a leader, a man amoung men. He has the things no one can ever take away from him. Honor, dignity, leadership skills. Jalen lead by example. Thank you sir.

If he does decide to transfer,... it will sting. But Jalen has to do whatever is best for Jalen. I will always be a Jalen Hurts fan,... even if he goes to that "other" school. Go'on Jalen,... Roll Tide!!

Bama-Gawja,... The Rematch,...

As I sit here on a Friday night anxiously awaiting the game tomorrow,.... I try to comprehend what the players must feel like. If I am sitting here with butterflies, how are they dealing with it?
I've read so much of the pre game hype that I'm basically tired of reading the articles and hearing what all of the talking heads have to say. I'm ready for the game. But at this point it is 20 hours away and wait, I will.

On paper, Georgia only has a clear advantage in one department,... special teams. Bamas offensive line vs Georgia's defensive line should hold up all day. Same with the defensive line for Bama. It should control the line of scrimmage for the most part. That's not to say Georgia's running backs won't have a good day, they will because the talent is there. But the backs will have an uphill struggle like they haven't faced all year. Bama's O line is very good in pass protection and will need to step it up in the run game for the backs to be successful. Quarterback wise, while Jake Fromm has had an excellent year, Tua Tagovailoa has had a better one. I've always said the game is won in the trenches, but you have to have a good QB too,... Bama has both.

I do think Kirby goes all out and plays his running QB, Justin Fields more and possibly throws in a Gus play or two because if Georgia loses, they are likely out of the playoff picture. The talking heads say Bama can lose and still be in,.. I'm saying just don't lose and you have nothing to worry about. The game will be close but Bama pulls away in the second half I think. Bama wins 38-24. Roll Tide!!

Texting And Driving,... STOP!!

I don’t know how many of you actually text and drive. I know I have been guilty of it. I have also been hit by a driver that was texting and it totaled my work van. I was lucky. I get to talk about it. My friend Wes’ wife cannot talk about it. While out for dinner on their second wedding anniversary, their vehicle was hit by a distracted driver. Rebecca had to be airlifted to Huntsville and didn’t make the trip back alive. All because a text message was so important. Man this is a hard one to do,…. a life was lost all because of a stupid cell phone. A human life,… think about that. And think about that the next time you pick up the phone to receive or send a text. Think about your own mother walking across the street and running over her all because you were distracted by a cell phone.

People,………… Please!!!! Put your phones down while you are driving. If you must talk,… CALL THEM and quit texting. Better yet pull over and have your conversation.

I want to share Wes' facebook post because it speaks volumes. The pain he is feeling, the senseless pain he is having to endure is just unfathomable to me. My mind cannot compute. But yet he and others like him have to deal with this kind of loss everyday. Wives, husbands, sons, daughter, moms, dads, aunts, uncles, you get the picture. People we know and love taken, stolen from us because we cannot put the dang phone down. It's time to stop. Here are some words from one that just lost his bride, his best friend and companion.

" These pictures are hard to look at, but I'm pissed off. If there is anything you can do to honor my precious Becca, it's to put your damn phone down and pay attention to your driving! Don't let another innocent life be lost because you are too stupid to pull to the side of the road. 5 extra minutes isn't worth the life of my wife, or anyone else's. There should be a mandatory minimum sentence for distracted driving, and I'm gonna do my damnedest to make it happen. If folks know that it's 5 extra minutes, or 5 years in prison, maybe this senseless stuff stop!"

Wes, you're in mine and so many others prayers.

Texting and driving folks,... this is what can happen,.........

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly,... Ole Miss vs Alabama,..

The Good,.. So many things can be said here. This is probably the first time that I cannot find too much fault with anything Bama did last night. I said too much. But as a whole, both sides of the ball dominated along with special teams play. I expected a shoot out prior to kick off and after the first play that resulted in a TD for the RebelBearLandsharks,.. I figured my initial thoughts were correct. I couldn't have been more wrong as Bama reeled off 62 unanswered points. I've been watching Alabama football for a long time and so far,... this is the best offense I have ever seen on the field for the Crimson Crusaders. I'll also go out on a limb and say it's the best I've ever seen.

The Bad,... Not much. Run protection could be a bit better and the turnovers need to be addressed along with the penalties. But those are fixable. I try to not be a Bama homer but dang,.. this team is good.

The Ugly,... The tacky Ole Miss fans. I'm all for some ribbing our rivals. That's part of the game. I like nothing more than to be out in public, see an auburn fan and say Roll Tide to them. Usually they respond back with a war eagle, as they should. But what the Ole Miss fans did just goes beyond the friendly ribbing,...

Why Is Florence City Schools Checking Your Drivers License?,….

fcs

Well,…  t seems that if you have a child in the Florence city school system you will get your drivers license scanned and a background check will occur. I realize times have certainly changed but to do background checks seems a bit intrusive to me. I got this from one parent this week after checking her child out of school,….

I went to check my child out today and they scanned my license. I said I don’t have in warrants in front of everyone and the main secretary goes, “I know but we still have to check”.  And FPD was in the office at the same time. They must have a pager system or something when a parent comes to pick up their child.

So let me understand this,… You go to the office to pick up your child,… a scan is done of your license. What happens if the scan results in outstanding traffic tickets? Is the parent arrested? And while all of this is happening the child that is due at the doctors office (the reason for checking them out) either is late or misses the appointment altogether.

I do realize times have changed as stated above but this isn’t just in the child's best interest. The jail is overflowing as it is,… in my humble opinion this is going way too far.

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly,... Louisville vs Alabama

Well the wait to see who would start at QB is now over. By the play of the quarterbacks it is obvious that Coach made the right decision. We knew he would no doubt but I really thought Jalen would get the nod first with Tua coming in later. I did think Tua was the better QB simply because he checks off his receivers better,... he goes through the progressions better. Tua won the team.

The Good,...  Tua's play,... for the most part it was as good as expected. Very impressed with his skills and judgment on the fly. Deionte Thompson is a beast in the secondary. The secondary as a whole played well against a pretty good passer and receiving crew. Defensive line play against the run was good. Louisville had something like 5 yards rushing after you deduct yards for a loss. The wide receivers for Bama really showed out. The play calling from the sidelines on both sides of the ball were good. Theres just numerous other things that I'm forgetting,... A good solid first game. But,....

The Bad,... Offensive line play was sporadic. It didn't matter if it were a run or pass play, the line failed several times against a defensive line they should have dominated. I'm still not sold on the kicking game. I knew punting was going to drop off since we lost JK Scott but I was hoping the field goals/extra point attempts would be better. Missing an extra point attempt is bad,... Penalties,... those must be eliminated and I know it was the first game of the season but some of those were mental mistakes. Those will improve I'm sure.

The ugly,... Coach Saban's face as he almost explodes on the sideline and after the game. You can read his face and see the wrath coming. The head official,... He looked a lot like he could be related to Coach Petrino,..  And that isn't a pretty sight.

Roll Tide!!
